Eleven-Thirty
Reception; Twelve-Fifteen Luncheon*
Nine O'Clock Council Meeting
Joseph Holleman Barlow, Governor
Speaker: Dr. William
M. Kelso
Director of Archaeology
Jamestown Rediscovery Project
"James Fort - Lost and Found"
Dr. Kelso ,
a Chicago native, is the "American archaeologist who directs the
Jamestown Rediscovery Project, an organized effort to uncover and
preserve artifacts from the Jamestown Colony, the first permanent
English settlement in North America." So prominent is Dr. Kelso in the
area of his expertise that the foregoing is the description of his work
from Britannica Online Encyclopedia. Beginning in historical archaeology
more than thirty years before his association with the Preservation
Virginia Jamestown Rediscovery archaeological project, he was director
of archaeology at Colonial Williamsburg's Carter's Grove, Monticello and
Poplar Forest. He also served as commissioner of archaeology for the
Virginia Historic Landmarks Commission. Dr. Kelso received an M.A. from
the College of William & Mary, and a Ph.D from Emory University.
Initially hired by APVA, now Preservation Virginia, to find James Fort
on Jamestown Island, this began a more than ten year search for the
specific site. Recently, there have been exciting new additions to
knowledge coming from the excavations n which he has participated and
directed. It is a privilege to hear about these new finds from the
person whose efforts made these discoveries possible.
