Jamestowne Society Fall Heritage Tour - Friday, November 4, 2016
The tour included a visit to two historic plantations, Mt. Airy and Sabine Hall, and a luncheon at Lowery's Restaurant in Tappahannock. The tour was open to all Jamestowne Society members and guests and was a sold-out success.
Mt. Airy was completed in 1764 in the neo-Palladian style. John Tayloe II (1721-1779) was the builder and at the time he was one of the richest planter in Virginia. His son-in-law, Francis Lightfoot Lee and his wife Rebecca Tayloe are buried on the estate. Mt. Airy became a National Historic Landmark in 1960 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966. It was featured on the television series, “American Rehab: Virginia”.
Sabine Hall was built by Landon Carter (1710-1778) between 1738-1742, son of Robert “King” Carter. It is a Georgian-style manor house with two wings and a fully paneled central hall and a carved walnut stairway. It overlooks six gardened terraces on the Rappahannock River. In 1969, it was added to the National Register of Historic and the next year it became a National Historic Landmark.
Lowery's Seafood Restaurant in Tappahannock served the tour group a seafood buffet of local, fresh, baked and broiled sea-food, popcorn shrimp, “All American Fried Chicken”, baked chicken, spoon bread, hush puppies, soup of the day, salad and dessert bars.
