Members of the Jamestowne Society gathered at the Williamsburg Lodge on Saturday, May 14, 2011,for the May Membership Meeting of the Society. On Friday, May 13, Company Governors attended an all-day Governors' Roundtable, and Council Members and Officers and Committee Chairpersons arrived early on Saturday to participate in the Council Meeting. Following the Council meeting, members attended a reception followed by a luncheon.
The speaker was Dr. William Kelso, who among this Society's membership really needs no introduction, as he is widely regarded as the pre-eminent authority on the continuing excavations on the Island and on the interpretation of the artifacts which are being continually unearthed there. His program brought up-to-the-moment updates to Society members on the exciting new excavations at the site of the 1608 church, including a well which can be positively dated between 1608 and 1610. Dr. William Kelso is Director of Archaeology for the Jamestown Rediscovery Project, and titled his presentation to the membership, "James Fort - Lost and Found." Dr.Kelso's career in historical archaeology began more than thirty years before his association with the Preservation Virginia Jamestown Rediscovery Project. For more than ten years, he has been searching for the precise site of the fort on Jamestowne Island.
Below are photos from the luncheon, including from the program presented by Dr.Kelso.
