Revolutionary War era to Jamestowne Society Qualifying Ancestor Project
Revolutionary War era to Jamestowne Society Qualifying Ancestor Project
What is this project about? The “Revolutionary War era to Jamestowne Society Qualifying Ancestor” project extracted data from approved Jamestowne Society applications. The names, birth years, and death years of any couple in the lineage for which one or both was an adult during the Revolutionary War period from an approved paper is listed. The published list includes the Qualifying Ancestor (QA) that one of them is a descendant of, along with the Qualifying Ancestor’s Jamestowne number. The project records, but does not publish, the number or numbers of applications containing that lineage.
What is the Society hoping to achieve? This project was started with the goal of helping prospective members find their Jamestowne Society Qualifying Ancestor. A secondary benefit is to help members identify supplemental QAs.
How do I use the information in my application to join the Jamestowne Society? The published list tells you that there exists an approved Jamestowne Society application for the published lineage. You may complete your application using your own research for proofs of each generation or you may purchase an approved application from the Jamestowne Society headquarters, which will be considered proof for any common generation, that is a generation that matches a generation in your application.
Some of the Revolutionary War era people are not patriots in other lineage society lists. Is this correct? That is correct. The Jamestowne Society does not examine whether either of the Revolutionary War era couple was a patriot, as defined by DAR, SAR, or another lineage society. We are merely saying that one or both of the Revolutionary War era couple were adults during the appropriate time frame.
What do you mean by Revolutionary War era? We have chosen to use the time period between July 1776 and 1783 as the Revolutionary War era. One or more of the couple must have been an adult during that period, regardless of whether they provided patriotic service. That means that at least one of the couple must have been born no later than 1762 and died after July 1776 to make that person an adult living during the Revolutionary War era. In some sense, picking the Revolutionary War era is arbitrary. We could have instead picked the year 1812 or 1850 to be alive. We chose the Revolutionary War era because many people interested in genealogy have been able to trace one or more lines of their family to that period, but are then challenged by the hundreds of possible lines at that point to continue to research, finding a Jamestowne Society Qualifying Ancestor.
Please note that the project is using approved Jamestowne Society applications. The project is not doing independent research starting with individuals alive at the time of the Revolutionary War and trying to determine whether they have any Jamestowne Society Qualifying Ancestors in their lineage. There are likely many more Revolutionary War era people who have such lineage, but have not yet been submitted as part of a membership application. Thus the RW2QA list is meant to be an aide to prospective members in identifying their Jamestowne Society QA. The list will never be a complete list of all Jametowne Society descendants alive at the time of the Revolutionary War.
When are new lines added? New lines are added once an application has been approved by the Society genealogist, and their digital application has been corrected. Applications that rely on an approved Jamestowne Society application who chose not to list the supporting documents of that application, cannot be listed.
